About Andrew Monserrate
Growing up in NYC and the Lower East side during the 80's was a very creative time for me... Being involved in the NYHC (New York Hardcore) music scene gave me the confidence to create music and art without barriers. Every show needed a flyer, every band needed a logo, every underground zine needed cool art, and most people wanted tattoo designs... endless drawing opportunities.. no computers or home printers... everything was done by hand.
One of the crazy things that didn't occur to me then was, how the whole Punk scene was dominated by Latinos... Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Peruvians, etc. They were all over the "scene"... Musicians, artist, Magazine writers, Hardcore Graffiti artist, Bartenders, Club booking agents, recording studio technicians etc. It's an honor and privilege being NewYorican and to Celebrate Our Heritage together.
